Goddard Earth Scientists Attend the SPARC Symposium

11.10.2022

GMAO staff were among several GSFC Earth Scientists who attended the 7th General Assembly of Stratosphere-troposphere Processes And their Role in Climate (SPARC; https://www.sparc-climate.org/meetings/7th-sparc-general-assembly/). They were also joined by colleagues from the Heliophysics Division. This multi-hub international SPARC meeting was designed to maximize in-person attendance, while reducing the carbon footprint compared to that of a single venue, for which more people would need to travel longer distances to attend. Several 610 scientists participated in the meeting at the Boulder, CO, Hub:

  • Debra Kollonige (614/SSAI) presented “Southern Hemisphere Additional Ozonesondes (SHADOZ) Network and Archive Activities: A 2022 Update”, which provided updates on SHADOZ ozonesonde network operations and data archive status
  • Feng Li (614/UMBC) presented “Impacts of Stratospheric Ozone Recovery on Southern Ocean Heat Content, Heat Uptake, and Meridional Ocean Heat Transport”. The 21st century simulations show that stratospheric ozone recovery reduces poleward ocean heat transport into the Southern Ocean and reduces Southern Ocean heat content
  • Qing Liang (614) served as a mentor for Early Career Scientists at the Tuesday lunch and after-dinner event on Thursday
  • Paul Newman (610) served as a mentor for Early Career Scientists at the Tuesday lunch and after-dinner event on Thursday
  • Clara Orbe (611/GISS) presented “The Dynamical and Trace Gas Responses of the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation to Historical and Future Climate Change”, and also served as a Session Chair
  • Steven Pawson (610.1) served as a Session Chair and as a mentor for Early Career Scientists at the Tuesday lunch and after-dinner event on Thursday
  • Ryan Stauffer (614) presented “SHADOZ’s Silver Anniversary: 25 Years of Accomplishments from the Premier Tropical Ozonesonde Network”, which summarized 25 years of scientific and technical accomplishments of the Southern Hemisphere Additional Ozonesondes network
  • Anne Thompson (610/UMBC) presented “Quality Assurance in Ozonesonde Profiles for Satellite and Trends Studies: JOSIE and the 2021 ASOPOS (Assessment of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for OzoneSondes) 2.0 WMO/GAW Report 268”, which detailed several decades of ozonesonde laboratory experiments and data quality assurance activities
  • Kris Wargan (610.1/SSAI) is on the SPARC-GA Organizing Committee, served as a Session Chair, and presented "M2-SCREAM: A Stratospheric Composition Reanalysis of Aura MLS", which introduced the new chemical reanalysis developed and produced at the GMAO
