GEOS Composition Forecasts

Data Access

GEOS-CF data can be accessed in different ways:

NCCS Data Portal: GEOS-CF output files can be directly accessed via the NASA Center for Climate Simulation (NCCS) public data portal. From the GEOS-CF parent directory, select the version directory (‘v2’ is the latest version). Files from the constituent assimilation/replay mode are in the ‘ana’ directory, while files from the forecast mode are in the ‘fcst’ directory. From there, files are organized by year, month, and day.

OpeNDAP: access the GEOS-CF data sets remotely without the need for transferring any data file first. You can open these datasets from a number of commonly used clients such as Matlab, IDL, GrADS or even from your C or Fortran program. Consult the OPeNDAP website for additional information.

CFAPI: A GEOS-CF Application Programming Interface (API) has been implemented, allowing access to GEOS-CF historical data and forecasts for single locations specified by latitude and longitude coordinates. Examples using the CFAPI are provided in the CFTools Github. Please contact us if you would like access to the API.

NCCS: If you have access to the NCCS computing facilities, the GEOS-CF data files are available under: /discover/nobackup/projects/gmao/geos_cf/pub/GEOS-CF_NRT

Google Earth Engine: Several GEOS-CF datasets are available in the Google Earth Engine data catalog as image collections.

Amazon S3 Zarr: Selected GEOS-CF outputs are available in Zarr format via Amazon S3. For example, the latest forecast data are available at s3://smce-geos-cf-public/geos-cf-v2-fcst-latest.zarr/. Please contact us if you have questions about these data.

Visualization

GMAO's FLUID: Visualizations are generated using an interactive Python-based framework named FLUID, developed within the GMAO.

GEOS-CF Map Tool: Use a panable, zoomable map tool to view geotiffs of GEOS-CF air quality data. Select a site by choosing from the dropdown “Quick Stations” or by clicking a point of interest on the map. Use this tool to generate forecast and historical replay time series images for any location on the globe. Visualized data sets are also available for download in Excel, ASCII, and JSON formats.

NASA SVS: Pre-generated animations of GEOS-CF data are produced by the NASA Scientific Visualization Studio (SVS).
