SMAP Level-4 Products, Beta Versions, are officially released …(11.02.2015)

The NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) is pleased to announce the availability of Level-4 datasets from the NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission. The new datasets include the SMAP Surface and Root Zone Soil Moisture (L4_SM) and the Net Ecosystem Carbon Exchange (L4_C) products developed and generated by GMAO in collaboration with The University of Montana and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

GEOS-5 Forward Processing to be upgraded on May 1, 2015 …(04.27.2015)

GMAO plans to upgrade the GEOS-5 Forward Processing (FP) system to a new GEOS-5 version that employs a Hybrid 3D Var analysis scheme. The background error covariance formulation used to produce the analysis now includes a flow-dependent component, obtained from an Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) coupled to the GSI. An enhancement to the forecast model parameterization of surface drag is also included in this upgrade.

The variable collections that are generated by the current version will continue to be generated by the new system without any change to the file format. So we expect there will be minimal, if any, technical impact on the FP data users.

The system switch will be made starting with FP data produced for 06z of May 1st.

Please note that Forward-Processing for Instrument Teams (FP-IT), the other lower resolution GEOS-5 real-time data stream, will not be affected by this FP system upgrade.
