GEOS FP - Version 5.13.1 Details

GMAO upgraded the GEOS Forward Processing (FP) system to a new GEOS version that employs a Hybrid 3D Var analysis scheme. The background error covariance formulation used to produce the analysis now includes a flow-dependent component, obtained from an Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) coupled to the GSI. An enhancement to the forecast model parameterization of surface drag was also included in this upgrade. The variable collections that were generated by the previous version continue to be generated by the new system without any change to the file format. So we expect there will be minimal, if any, technical impact on the FP data users. The system switch was made starting with FP data produced for 06z of May 1st.
