GEOS-CF Gets a Major Upgrade in GEOS-CF Version 2

The GMAO released a major update of its Composition Forecast system (GEOS-CF, version 2) in January of this year, replacing the system that has been in production since 2018. GEOS-CF provides daily estimates and 5-day forecasts of global atmospheric composition at 25-km horizontal resolution, which supports a variety of research and applications, including NASA satellite missions, aircraft campaigns and instrument teams, local and regional air quality forecasters, and environmental health practitioners.

The updates in GEOS-CFv2 include direct assimilation of satellite ozone data, updated atmospheric physics and chemistry, more recent emissions data, addition of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) forecasts, and expanded visualization and data access interfaces. These updates substantially improve NASA’s global atmospheric composition forecasting capabilities, providing users with better predictions of key atmospheric constituents and easier access to global composition forecast data.
