"Land Data Assimilation Activities in the NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office"
Presentation at the US CLIVAR Workshop on Evaluation of Reanalyses, Baltimore, MD, USA, 2010.

Abstract:
A myriad of different land surface observations are candidates for assimilation into the land component of an Integrated Earth System Analysis. The Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) at NASA/GSFC is performing fundamental research into the development of new land data assimilation strategies. This poster provides an update on GMAO research into the assimilation of satellite-derived soil moisture, snow cover, and surface temperature in an off-line land data assimilation system. It also describes long-term plans at the GMAO for the assimilation of land observations into the coupled land-atmosphere system and the assimilation of additional land surface variables (e.g., vegetation phenology) as part of an overall IESA effort.
