Description
An optimal interpolation method is used in the GMAO ocean analyses that provides initial conditions for the coupled model forecast. In the UOI, subsurface temperature fields are assimilated and model temperature profiles are updated. To maintain convective stability, salinity is adjusted based on the model T-S relations (Troccoli and Haines 1999 and Troccoli et al., 2003).
Another scheme used at GMAO as a contribution to the ODASI Consortium is the assimilation of temperature and climatological salinity simultaneously. This is to correct for the model bias in its salinity.
