This data set contains binary files of daily averaged temperature data from the TAO array of ATLAS moorings maintained by NOAA's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory. Time series of ocean temperature at a range of instrument depths from 1 meter to 500 meters are included.

These files are organized by year. For example, T_TAO_2000.ieee contains all the data from 2000, December 1999, and January 2001.

Any of the data files in this directory can be read using the example fortran program read_tao.f90 in the DOCS directory.

Several fields were added to this data set:

  • field_id_spc = 110112
    Specific field identification code for the profile: Ocean In Situ Observed Fixed Buoy Temperature Profile (see Field Codes )

  • ibas_gen
    General basin identification code for the profile (see Basin Codes )

  • ibas_spc
    Specific basin identification code for the profile (see Basin Codes )

  • stn_name
    Profile station name corresponding to the WMO number where applicable.

  • inst_error
    Instrument error.

  • gradient
    Temperature gradient in IEEE File
    Observation error in NetCDF File

  • stn_id = 501
    Station identification code for the profile: Tao Mooring (see Station Codes )

  • tqc_prf = 1
    Quality control flag for the profile: good data

  • tqc_lev = 1
    Quality control flag for each profile level: good data

  • interp_prf = 0
    Interpolated profile flag: 1=yes, 0=no

  • superob_prf = 0
    Superobbed profile flag: 1=yes, 0=no

  • miss = 999.e9
    Missing data flag
