GMAO PRODUCTS
| GEOS-5 Atmospheric Assimilation Products | MERRA Products | Request Field Campaign Support |
GMAO generates GEOS-5 data products in near real time or reanalysis modes in support of diverse user communities. GEOS-5 data production started in Jan. 2007 with V5.0.1 and has gone through several upgrades since then to provide higher quality products from scientific progress in both the analysis and the atmospheric model used in the assimilation. The spatial resolution of the data products has also increased from ½ deg in horizontal resolution to ¼ deg, taking advantage of the advances in the high-end computing technology (HEC).
The product generation uses HEC resources at GSFC's NASA Center For Climate Simulation (NCCS).
Notice: Location of production forecast data has changed
Effective with the 00 GMT forecast on June 30, 2011, GMAO has upgraded our production forecasts to use GEOS-5.7.2. Links from GMAO web pages have been reset to point to these data, which are branded "fp" (forward-processing). GEOS-5.7.1p1 forecast data can still be accessed with the old opendap and ftp paths.
Assimilation data at 1/2-degree from GEOS-5.2 continues to be produced as normal, but is no longer linked with the name "fp". Data from this older system are available under "legacy_fp" at:
http://opendap.nccs.nasa.gov:9090/dods/GEOS-5/legacy_fp/0.5_deg
and
ftp://gmao_ops@ftp.nccs.nasa.gov/legacy_fp/
GEOS-5 real time production at ¼ deg started in August 2011
- the horizontal spatial resolution is increased from ½ degree to ¼ degree
- file format is changed from HDF-4 to netCDF-4/HDF-5
- temporal frequency of 3-D products is changed from 6 hr to 3 hr
- temporal frequency of most 2-D products is changed from 3 hr to 1 hr
- new variables are added such as ocean and aerosols fields
- The groupings of variables in the GEOS-5.7.2 file collections are considerably different from those of GEOS-5.2.0
Request for Acknowledgment of Use of GMAO Data Sets
Users of GMAO data sets are requested to reference the source of the data in any publication, e.g.
"The GEOS-5 data used in this study/project have been provided by the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center."
Users who retrieve GEOS-5 data directly through the data portal links might use this acknowledgement:
"The GEOS-5 data used in this study/project have been provided by the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center through the online data portal in the NASA Center for Climate Simulation".
Users of MERRA data might use this acknowledgement:
"MERRA data used in this study/project have been have been provided by the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center through the NASA GES DISC online archive".
